The Mode of Autonomic innervation of the Vagina of the Rabbit

Abstract
Anatomically, the vagina is innervated through the vaginal plexus which is consisted mainly of parasympathetic fivers originated from the sacral parasympathetic out also Anatomically, the vagina is innervated through the vaginal plexus which is consisted mainly of parasympathetic fibers originated from the sacral parasympathetic outflow but also includes sympathetic fibers derived partly from the hypogastric nerve and in part directly from the sacral sympathetic trunk. However the physiological function of these nerves and the adrenotropic receptors in this structure have not been fully understood.
In this paper, the effects of stimulation of the hypogastric nerve and the pelvic nerve on the vagina in situ, and the effects of some autonomic drugs on the isolated vagina were investigated. In addition, the nature of receptors in this structure was studied. The results obtarned are as follows:
1. Stimulation of the hypogastric nerve produced solely a marked contractio in situ and the most prominent effect was obtained by the stimulation with frequency ranged from 50 to, 60 cps, where as stimulation of the pelvic nerve had no response.
2. By the administration of either epinephrine or norepinephrine, a marked contraction of the isolated vagina was prodeced, and this effect was abolished by pretreatment of phenoxybenzamine, and alpha-receptor blocking agent, where as the effect was not affected by pretreatment of dichloroisoproterenol, a beta-receptor blocking agent.
3. Isopropylarterenol, a beta-receptor stimulant had no effect on the isolated vagina
4. Acetylcholine had no effect on the isolated vagina.
5. Motility and the responses to the catecholamine on the upper portion of the vagina were more prominent than those of the lover portain.
6. From these results, it was concluded that the vagina was innervated solely by the adrenergic fibers and the receptor in this structure was alphareceptor.
